Notre-Dame-des-Arts is saddened to hear of the passing of former Liberal MP and cabinet minister Warren Allmand. Mr. Allmand served as MP for three decades, representing the NDG neighbourhood until his retirement in 1997. As solicitor general, Allmand is remembered for introducing Bill-C48, which abolished the death penalty in Canada. As a progressive and a humanist–democracy and justice was at the core of his values. He tirelessly fought to improve social programs, defend the rights of indigenous people and publicly call out his own government’s lack of transparency.
Neigbours and friends in NDG will remember that Warren loved theatre and music and worked diligently as the secretary of the Empress Cultural to establish a home for arts and culture on Sherbrooke Street West. Always eager to aid organizations that would bring more culture to NDG, Warren helped the board of Notre Dame-des-Arts get established. We will remember him for his sense of humour, grace and humanity. He will be greatly missed.
Our thoughts go out to his friends and family.
